Where Did It Go?

Emails have been rolling in, asking where the FIAR tab is. Unfortunately, I do not have time to answer every email. In order to clarify some things, I wanted to take a minute to answer some of your questions. Here goes!

Where are the FIAR Resources? Are they going away?

Yes. And no.

In addition to our amazing blog team, there are four people who do all the behind-the-scenes stuff at Homeschool Share.

Two found HSS at inception, Wende and Celia; they have been crazy-generous with their time, talents, and wisdom.

One {and only ♥} Jason, the brains behind keeping things running when thousands of you are downloading like there is no tomorrow. 🙂

And there is me, Ami.

Our team did not wake up Wednesday morning and think to ourselves, “Hmm . . . today would be a good day to take down all the FIAR Resources from HSS. Yes, let’s upset hundreds of people and do that.” Nope. Didn’t happen. The decision has been a long time in the works.

We are all in agreement {for a variety of complex reasons} that it’s time to remove the FIAR name from our site.

Did Five in a Row make you do this?

No, absolutely not.

But we’ve never had Five in a Row’s bona fide blessing. And this has been a conflict in my being for a long, long time.

Why didn’t you make an announcement to give us time to download things?

When I’ve done this in the past, our servers usually start to smoke and catch fire. Or something like that. 🙂

Seriously, a proclamation equals a download frenzy. Our servers would complain and eventually kaput. And then no one would be able to access anything. Since 80% of our visitors to the site are not coming for FIAR resources, I thought it would be best to at least keep the majority happy.

Can’t you simply take the FIAR name off of everything?

Again yes. And no.

We are repackaging some of the units and lapbooks. Anything referencing a specific FIAR lesson is likely to be deleted unless it is an obvious lesson for that book (i.e. for Ping lessons on China).

I had plans to row A Pair of Red Clogs, and the page is gone. What am I supposed to do?

Please don’t panic. I’m sure it will take our search button a bit of time to catch up with our remodeling, but at Homeschool Share you can find resources for any unit study you are doing. Please see the bottom of this post for some links to help you until our search engine figures out what we are doing.

Any more details you want to share? We’d really like to know more.

If you’re looking for a juicy story, you aren’t going to find it here.

The reality of bringing home three more children {from hard places} has started to settle in. I am not going to be able to pour hours into Homeschool Share. Getting the site up to speed has been on my long list for almost two years. Over the next several months, I’ll be pushing as hard as I can to make that a reality. As I think about what I want the site to look like five years from now, FIAR is not part of that vision (for our sake and for theirs).

Finding Things

If you are using Before Five in a Row, we have some lapbooks that match the book titles. You will find these book titles in our Level 1 Section. Caps for Sale is in the literature based unit section. The other books are in the labpooks section.

  1. I’m sorry to hear that you’re removing them; I found them really helpful when rowing with my for two children and had been very much looking forward to using them with the next child this fall as well. I wish you’d given everyone warning so we could go in and grab them before they disappeared.

  2. Ami actually covered that in the post:

Why didn’t you make an announcement to give us time to download things?

When I’ve done this in the past, our servers usually start to smoke and catch fire. Or something like that.

A proclamation equals a download frenzy. Our servers would complain and eventually kaput. And then no one would be able to access anything.

The site receives a super heavy amount of traffic just with regular day to day browsing. So much so that we had to move the pdf’s to a second server behind a second internet connection.

If everyone started downloading all the pdf’s at once servers would literally grind to a halt. That’s why no heads up was given.

  3. Just wanted to write and say how much I appreciate and LOVE your site. Without a doubt it is my favourite for lapbooking. I find so many helpful and encouraging ideas. Thank-you so much for putting all this together, the work that you all do to make it a success and your great ideas. I do not want to kick a gift horse in the mouth. I’ve seen this in the past where people have complained and then the site dissolves. I am appreciative of whatever you post or remove. You are a blessing to our family.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, Malanie.

There has certainly been a mix of sweet and sour over the past few days, but the site won’t dissolve no matter how ugly people decide to be.

I do appreciate your comments. If you need help finding something, please ask. 🙂

  4. I am a fairly new follower of your web site but have really been blessed by it’s many resources. I was wondering why the books that FAIR uses must be taken off? That company doesn’t own the copy right to those books and some people use them regardless of their FIAR affiliation. I can understand not citing yourself as a FIAR resource and taking their name off your site. Why the need to delete those books entirely?
Again, thank you for your endless work and wonderful resources, I will continue to use and recommend your site.

    1. Hi April,

It’s not the books we are taking down. I think this is where the confusion is. We are taking down printables that go w/ the lessons found in the FIAR manuals–lessons that aren’t obvious to us. After we do that, if there isn’t enough for a full lapbook, we either add lessons and printables, or we decide to take that book title down.

Thanks for your kind words. 🙂

  5. I’ve been using HSS for six years, and I really, really appreciate all the work and the generous spirit of those of you who share your printables with us. I respect your right to do as you feel best with your work and your website, but this is really throwing me as I plan my next couple of units out. Is there anywhere that the indexes for FIAR books will still be available? Or the copywork pages and picture pages that Tamara (from All of a Kind Family) had created? She’s closed her blog and the only place I could find them was on HSS.

      1. I have the same question. I used the general resources a lot, like the Usborne file, Magic School Bus, Giant Book of Science…ect. Will those files still be available?

  6. Change is hard, but we understand….you’ve been doing this labor of love for YEARS now…I know as I used these free materials and contributed materials years ago.
You are about to add 3 blessings to your family who will need extra attention as everyone blends into a family.
Thank-you for all you’ve done and will continue to do FOR FREE, no less!
You were a blessing when our kids were younger (they are aged 16 and 21 now) and HSS will continue to bless the homeschool community. THANK-YOU!!!

    1. Thanks so much, Heidi. It’s so good to hear support from our contributors; they’ve been the sweetest through this experience. I think they understand the most how hard this is for me, yet why I believe I need to do it.

Your kids sure have grown up! 🙂 Thanks for lending a helping hand to Homeschool Share when we needed it. 🙂 I’m gearing up to use your Pentunia unit with Simon soon; he loves her! 🙂

  7. Hi Ami,

Thanks for having them available as long as you did, and for free. It taught me a lot about how to lapbook. Your time and effort are generous and appreciated!

  8. I think you are very wise to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading in your life and on your blog. Blessing as you work and work and work to get things back in order again. God will totally bless your obedience. 🙂

  9. Ami, thank you for the explanation. I, too, was new to lapbooking this year and your site provided so much wonderful information and made a huge difference in our year! Good luck on your new family endeavors. My youngest two asked today when we will have more babies 🙂

  10. I also wanted to add my thanks for all the work that you’ve done. I appreciate all the time and effort you’ve put in, and I’m sorry that you’ve experienced some negativity because of this decision. Blessings on you and your (now bigger and blessed) family.

  11. Oh,I had a question as well – would I be violating copyright if I sent a couple of the files that have been taken down (that I’d already downloaded) to someone who didn’t have them? Thanks.

  12. I am so saddened by this. The lapbooks we have made so far have been perfect for the titles we read. My kids just love reviewing them. I just wish we were a bit farther along, so that this change wouldn’t have hit us mid-stride in our first year. I would love it if any could be shared from people who already have them. Also, I am unable to open some of your “reworked” files. I am getting an error about unauthorized access.

    1. Hi Sarah,

The website is experiencing crazy amounts of traffic, and files aren’t opening. Hopefully, they will be able to be downloaded soon.

  13. I am so, so sad that you did this. The rest of my FIAR school year is in shambles. Seriously. I planned our year based around these lapbooks. I would have made alternate arrangements if I’d had any idea this was going to happen. Since I teach a co-op of 12 kids, this shoots down a lot of little hearts. I really wish you had pulled the plug after the school year was complete. Very, very disappointed.

  14. What a disappointment. I have loved using your website and the lapbook materials that went along with B4FIAR and FIAR. Now I will have to look elsewhere 🙁

  15. Thank you so much for the hippo and Hungary info. Neither are subjects that I know much about, so I am really looking forward to next week.

  16. I am so thankful for this website and everything that has been offered through the years. I found this site when I started homeschooling 3 years ago and it has helped me tremendously as we enjoy lapbooks and unit studies.

I was surprised by the changes, but I am grateful for this website and the resources it offers. I will continue to recommend it and sing its praises. Thank you for all the hard work put into running something so great!

May the Lord continue to bless you all abundantly!

  17. Thank you to everyone on the team for all the hard work, time, and money you have invested in Homeschool Share.

  18. I know there are many of us that really look forward to FIAR. I personally didn’t dwl any since I was going to go as I use method.
WHAT IF someone else wanted to start a site with those files. Do you still have them? Or are they gone forever?

    1. Hi Ginger,

We are not interested in having the files hosted on another website. We are keeping many of them as we are writing our own units and putting together HSS lapbooks for the titles.

      Ami 🙂

  19. Oh my goodness 🙁 I have always said how much I love all your five in a row resources and how helpful they have been, I would be willing to pay for them! My children love doing their lapbooks for each book, I am going to have to get creative for our book for this week since it is gone now, maybe this will force my brain to think of awesome ideas like you guys have 🙂 You are still awesome and so generous for everything that you offer on here so thank you!

    1. Hi Deidre,

Thank you for being positive, even when things are upside-down right now! 🙂

You can use our type-on-em templates to make your own components and then let your children draw the illustrations for them. They are super easy to use! 🙂

Here are the titles that we now have complete units or lapbooks for. These are staying:
      Clown of God
      Katy and the Big Snow
      Night of the Moonjellies
Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening
      Cranberry Thanksgiving
      The Glorious Flight
      Mike Mulligan
      A New Coat for Anna
      Down Down the Mountain
      The Tale of Peter Rabbit
      Miss Rumphius

      We kept activities for ~
When I Was Young in the Mountains (on Appalachian Mountains Connections Page)
Very Last First Time (on Canada Country Lapbook page)
The Story About Pin (China Country Lapbook page)
A Pair of Red Clogs (Japan Country Lapbook page)

Also, we are working hard behind the scenes redoing
      The Story of Ferdinand
      Make Way for Ducklings
      Owl Moon
      Follow the Drinking Gourd
      Harold and the Purple Crayon

Decisions for Volumes 3 and 4 are still being made.

If you need help locating anything, there are links in the blog post.

      Thanks! 🙂 Ami

  20. Thank you for all you do. I’ve really enjoyed your site, so much so that I’ve planned quite a bit of our school year around the FIAR lapbooks. I’m very disappointed its come to an end. If the emails are rolling in asking where it has gone, doesn’t that mean you have enough people using it to keep it on here? Just a thought. However I know how it feels to be a busy hs mom. So thank you for your effort anyhow. 🙂

  21. Ami and Jason and crew,

So impressed with your “stand up” attitude. I can only imagine how this has grieved you all. So proud of you. So very, very proud.

So grateful for the resources in general I’ve found. But well beyond printables and lesson plans and even the forums have been the TRUE FRIENDSHIP that has resulted from this site. So blessed to have been a part of this journey. You are all so very loved. Prayers as you continue to weather this season.

    1. I have to agree with Whitney. I just don’t see why they couldn’t just be left as they were. It’s probably going to be more work and time to “re-work” everything. It just makes no sense at all!

  22. I am in the UK and have been using your site for nearly four years now. Whilst your reasons confuse me somewhat, I believe completely you have given this much thought and would not have acted unless you felt it were truly necessary.

Thank you, thank you for your continued commitment to providing such awesome free resources. I am so grateful to you for helping discover lapbooking and giving my children a new way to learn.

    Blessings to you all.

  23. I also have used your material for several years and have greatly appreciated the free activities you offered. For the remainder of this year, I only needed the lap books for Gullywasher, Higgins Bend Song and Dance, and Albert. Is there any way I can access those? Thank you so much – thank you also for the tie ins you’ve given to other sources within your website (like study guides for Medieval times when doing Duchess Bakes a Cake).

  24. Thank you for the many years that you provided FIAR printables and ideas on Homeschool Share. We really loved and depended on all of the lapbook lessons to go with our FIAR titles each year. It made planning each row so easy and comprehensive because of how well it was organized on your site. Often, there were ideas for the lapbooks that I never would have thought of without the lessons/printables on your site. We will miss the lapbooks and other ideas that went along with each book, especially since we are mid-year and not able to spend the needed time to recreate lapbook lessons/printables ourselves. We will still look for corresponding lessons/printables and ideas from Homeschool Share for our remaining FIAR titles. Thank you for the FIAR titles that are remaining on the site in their new format, and we hope you will consider included lessons/printables for titles found in FIAR vols 3 & 4 (will we be starting vol 3 next year). Blessings to you and your growing family!

  25. i have never posted here and just want to say how truly wonderful your resources are, and how much i appreciate them, in what ever form they will be coming in, this has been and will be and invaluable part of out curriculum….thank you so much!

  26. I just want to say Thank you for providing these free resources for us to use. I know everyone is angry that the ease of using them is gone. But I am so grateful that most of them are still there for us. I use FIAR and your site has added so many wonderful resources for us whiling doing the FIAR. Its really enhanced our experience using FIAR. Thank you for keeping most of the titles.

    1. Thanks for your kind words, Jen. It’s been a hard two weeks — doing what is right for Homeschool Share and people not understanding. Thank you for seeing that *many* of the printables are remaining. They are, for the most part, turning into full lapbooks or units that ANYONE can use (not just those using FIAR). I think some people are so very angry that they can’t see what’s still there; they can only see what is gone.

We are still working hard to get Make Way for Ducklings, Little Nino’s Pizzeria, Follow the Drinking Gourd, The Story of Ferdinand, Duchess Bakes a Cake, and Warm as Wool back up! 🙂

  27. I’m disappointed with this new development. I really, really wish there was a way you could have kept them on here. Oh well. I appreciate the time the resources were on here and for FREE. I just wish I was able to know about this so I could download it all ahead of time. Thanks for all of your hard work and being a blessing to me and my homeschool journey.

  28. I wanted to say that while I am disappointed that the lap books are gone, I can appreciate you doing what you feel is right. Your site was a blessing to me as I started homeschooling 4 years ago. You made the FIAR curriculum come alive and create amazing momentos for my boys. We no longer row FIAR but I wished we still did and I send tons of new homeschoolers to your site. Thank you for all your work you so tirelessly did for all the new, overwhelmed homeschool moms. May you continue to bless others for years to come.

  29. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this page, I often wonder how you do it! May God bless you, especially with you new family addition!!!

  30. I think everything looks great! You are wise to follow that feeling in your spirit and remove the FIAR references. HSS has always been a wonderful resource for homeschoolers and it gets better all the time.
Big Hugs to all of you,

  31. We are new homeschoolers this year and have used your BFIAR printables for our girls. We love them and thank you for what you have done, it was really helpful as a new homeschooler who wasn’t sure where to begin. I am sorry some people haven’t be understanding. You are very generous to do all this work and let others use it for free. And there is still a lot there to go with some great books and unit studies. God Bless you and your family as it grows.

  32. Dear Ami,

Thank you so much for providing such amazing content. You and the HomeSchoolShare team have a very special place in our family’s heart because these lapbooks make rowing FIAR so much fun! Your hard work is appreciated.

  33. Let me begin by thanking you for your site and all of your work. I have, over the years, utilized your site with my children and we have learned a lot and had great learning experiences, thanks to you. While I totally understand your prerogative to run your site the way you see fit, I would also like to point out that all of the books used in the FIAR curriculum are sold independent of FIAR. So as long as you are nor directly referencing FIAR it is totally legal and moral to provide materials that complement said books. As a matter of fact, doing similar materials that could be used for lapbooking for any number of other books would be a great idea. I, personally, love the materials that you provide and the way they are provided. I like being able to pick and choose which items fit the ages of my children and our learning styles. I would be thrilled and willing to pay for your materials. A yearly subscription to your site would be ideal. A set up like Enchanted Learning, perhaps.

  34. Thank you Ami for being led by God on this matter. I am thrilled to come here and find so many free resources for homeschooling! I love Cloudy With A Change of Meatballs Unit, and I literally can not wait for our fall apple unit with The Giving Tree and Johnny Appleseed.
Thank you team for all your hard work, and making my job as a homeschooler that much easier.

    God bless

    1. I love Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, too! So fun! 🙂 Hopefully the other two units will have makeovers and be repackaged before you need them in the fall. I’m working hard to get through the entire site. 🙂

    2. I hope you enjoy our units with your kiddos! Have fun! Be sure to check back on The Giving Tree and Johnny Appleseed. Both should be updated in the next few months. 🙂

  35. What a terrible horrible thing to do to families in the middle of the school year! I, like many others I am sure, had planned out my school year week-by-week using the FIAR resources in your site. Because I cannot afford to print them all at once for the year I have been using my library’s free weekly print allowance to print for my 3 children. Now our school schedule is ruined and all you suggest is that I use your blank templates to make my own resources – yeah that’s going to fit right into the muffle of a busy school year.

As a company working in education it should have been a no-brained to do this in June.

Sooooooooo disappointed in you guys. What a short-sighted and hurtful decision to those who used to support you.

  36. I really can’t understand what you’re saying. To me it sounds like the kind of thing people say when they don’t really want to say anything. “We want to explain, but we don’t really want to explain.” I have always viewed this site as what the name says, Homeschool SHARE. I don’t have the computer ability to make these things myself. I have paid for all my Five in a Row books, I am not stealing anything from them if I use your printables instead of my own hand-drawn folders, which is what I always did before I found your site. Just because you don’t share your stuff anymore I am not going to be able to afford to go to the FIAR website and BUY a bunch more stuff from them (now that they sell it), so they’re not losing any business that way either. I made the decision years ago to buy all my FIAR books, even though I could have gotten them all for free from my local library. I actually thought your site caused many people to buy books from FIAR because they saw your great stuff and wanted to then do that with their kids. I know I have personally directed countless people to your site and to the FIAR manuals. The printable on your site are of no use without the FIAR manuals, so how exactly are you taking away from the Lamberts?

I always looked at this site as a way of sharing with other home schoolers from a distance, we are all working at homeschool in our own way and we have this in common. I don’t do computer stuff, but I figured I was sharing with my local support group when I share books, materials, ideas, and expertise with them, or any new home schoolers who call and need advice, suggestions, and help.

Everyone can understand that you’re going to be very busy now, but I can’t understand the fact that since the stuff was all up on your site already it is causing you LESS work to then go take it all down. Fine, don’t add new stuff, I can understand that, but why can’t you just leave up the stuff you already have?

I for one will not be surprised if you “suddenly” start selling things in the future.

  37. Ami,
Thank you so much for your generous spirit and sharing SO MUCH for FREE! You could have chosen to just take the whole site down and walked away. I can’t express how appreciative I am for all the selfless hours you have spent to bless many homeschoolers and have continued that by keeping your site up AND re-working these studies. THANK YOU! May God richly bless you and your family!

    1. Thank you so much, Julie. Kind words are such an encouragement to me right now as I work my way through the site, updating things and trying to make them better. Thank you for your encouragement.

  38. Hey Ami and all! Thanks so much for all your hard work over the years; i haven’t been on the site for a while because of changes in my homeschool but your site is fabulous and a sweet labor of love!

    1. Thanks so much, Denise.

I have been thinking about you a lot lately as I package up units; you wrote SO many great units! Thank YOU! 🙂

  39. It’s amazing to me the replies that some people have on here. I, for one, have appreciated your resources and have used them with my kindergartener this year. So it’s going to take me a little extra work to find what I’m looking for. So what?! I commend you for following what you feel is right even when you know the vast majority of people are probably going to be upset. It’s a fantastic example of “be in this world, not of it” (romans 12:2)

  40. Thanks for all of your time and energy, not to mention the loads of hard work you put into creating all of the FIAR resources. You have blessed our family! My husband and I always talked about finding a way to give back to your site when you were giving us so much! Thanks for everything! Bless You and your team!

  41. So very sad about this! This has been a wonderful resource for our family and made our books and learning come alive. Thanks so much! God will provide!

  42. Ami,

I’m MOST certain knowing you that this was not a decision that was made rashly, but with a lot of prayer and discussion. It really makes me sad to read some of the comments here. You have done an AMAZING job over the years to provide families with FREE resources. You have been a blessing above all – know that and I pray that not one of the unkind comments takes root in your heart.

If anything, I am most impressed with your heart, desire to serve others, and do what you feel God is leading you to do.

Love you much and {hugs} to you.

  43. Hi, Ami,
I didn’t know you had taken down the FIAR resources until today. I haven’t used it, but have seriously contemplated getting FIAR. I remember looking at the web pages integrating science with the books, and I’m trying to remember what the science books were that you guys recommended to go so well with FIAR. Was it Usborne Book of Science aCtivities? I would like to buy it if you could recommend them again. I remember a volume 1 and 2 of whatever it was. Thank you for your help!

  44. Amy, I just want to say THANK YOU for making those available to us for many years. I competely understand and respect your desicion to remove the FIAR resources.

I’m always grateful of THE MANY resources that you share in your blogs and homeschoolshare. Our family has blessed so much from them.

You and your family are so loved!

  45. This is one of my favorite sites! I appreciate all of your hard work, what a labour of love to bless others with FREE lapbooks and unit studies. Thank you to you and your team!

I agree with some of the other comments, I am a little shocked by some of the negative comments. I understand that this may have been a major bump in the road for some, but you improvise and move on : )

I hope it is ok to mention this, forgive me if it is not. FIAR sent me their lapbooks for free when I signed up for their blog.

  46. I completely understand your decision to remove some of the files. I have to say that I am LOVING the ones you have reworked! I love that you have included lesson plans. I just print and divide what I want to do each day. You and your team have obviously put a lot of hard work into these wonderful printables. THANK YOU!
