Instructions


Chapter One

A Job in Town:  What was Ma’s response to Laura having a job in town?  How did Laura feel about having a job in town?

Ma told Pa that she wouldn’t have a daughter of hers working in a hotel.  Laura didn’t like the idea of working in town.


Chapter Two

The Calf:  How was Laura teaching the calf to drink out of a pail?

Laura dipped her fingers in the milk and let the calf lick her fingers.  Slowly, she lowered her fingers to the milk in the pail.

Morning Walk:  Describe what Mary and Laura talked about on their morning walk?

Four Kernels:  Write down Pa’s saying about using four kernels of corn.

One for the blackbird, One for the crow, And that will leave Just two to grow


Chapter Three

The Hair Cut:  What cut Pa’s hair?

A mouse cut Pa’s hair while he was sleeping.

Kitten:  Why did the Ingalls need a cat?  Where did Pa get a kitten?  How much did he pay for the kitten?

The gophers were eating the corn, and the mice were getting to the food in the house.  Pa got the kitten in town.  He paid 50 cents for the kitten.


Chapter Four

Chickens:  Who was going to give the Ingalls chickens?  What is a pullet?  What is a cockerel?  What would they do with the hens that were told old to lay eggs?

Mrs. Boast was going to give the Ingalls a setting of chickens.  A pullet is a female chicken under a year of age.  A cockerel is a male chicken under a year of age.  When they hens were too old to lay eggs, Ma would make them into chicken pie.

Cat and Mouse Story:  Retell the story of the cat and mouse fight.


Chapter Five

Laura’s Job:  What was Laura’s job in town?

Laura would be sewing shirts.

The Clancy’s and Mrs. White:  How was this family different from Laura’s family?  What did she think about them?

The Clancy’s and Mrs. White were constantly arguing and yelling loudly at each other.  Their words were peppered with foul language.  Laura remembered Ma’s words, “It takes all kinds of people to make a world.”


Chapter Six

Laura’s Wages:  How much did Laura get paid?  What did she do with the money?  Why?

Laura received $1.50 per week.  She gave the money to Ma for Mary’s college education.  Laura said she didn’t need anything, so she wanted the money to be saved for Mary.

Prairie Life:  Where did the woman and children live?  Why?  Where did the men live?  Why?

The woman and children lived on their homesteads in order to comply with the homesteading laws.  The men lived in town in order to support their families.


Chapter Seven

The Chicks:  How would Carrie care for the chicks?  How would Grace care for the chicks?

It would be Carrie’s job to feed and water the chicks.  It would be Grace’s job to watch for hawks.

Plans:   When might Mary be able to go to college?  How would Ma and Pa use Laura’s wages?

Ma and Pa thought that they might have enough money to send Mary away to college in the fall.  They would use Laura’s wages to purchase fabric to make a dress and hat for Mary.


Chapter Eight

Fourth of July:   Describe the 4th of July celebration in town.


Chapter Nine

Mary’s Clothes:  What clothes did they make for Mary?

Blackbirds:  What were the blackbirds eating?  What did the Ingalls do?  Were they able to save the crops?  What did they have for dinner?

The blackbirds were eating the corn.  Laura and Ma tried to scare away the blackbirds.  Pa shot them.  They were only able to save a little of the corn that wasn’t quite ripe.  They had blackbird pie for dinner.


Chapter Ten

Off to College:  How did Laura keep Carrie and Grace occupied when Mary, Ma and Pa left to take Mary to college?

Laura decided they would clean the house from top to bottom to surprise Ma.

Surprises from Ma:  What surprises did Ma bring back from the trip for the girls?

Ma brought back Autograph Albums.


Chapter Eleven

School:  Who was the new school teacher?  Who showed up at school much to Laura’s dismay?  How did Laura feel about her?

Miss. Wilder, the Wilder brothers’ sister, was the new school teacher.  Nellie Olson from Plum Creek showed up at school.  Laura did not like Nellie or her attitude.


Chapter Twelve

Preparing for Winter:  How did the Ingalls prepare for winter?  How had the town prepared for winter?

The Ingalls moved into town for winter.  They made sure they had plenty of hay, food, and coal to make it through the winter.  The town had stocked up on groceries and coal in case the train couldn’t make it through during the winter.


Chapter Thirteen

Nellie and Laura:  What did Laura and Nellie argue about?

Nellie had made a comment to Laura that she wasn’t all that just because her Pa was on the school board.  Laura said that it was too bad that Nellie was just a country girl because if they lived in town maybe her Pa could be on the school board and actually have a say about what happened in the school.


Chapter Fourteen

Sent Home from School:  Describe the events that lead up to Laura and Carrie being sent home from school.


Chapter Fifteen

Nellie’s Tales:  What tale did Nellie tell?  Would anyone trust her with their secrets?

Nellie told the story about when Miss. Wilder was younger.   She went on to share her nickname Lazy, Lousy, Lizy, Jane.   The girls decided that they could never trust Nellie with their secrets.

Ma’s Advice:  What did Ma write in Laura’s autograph album?

If wisdom’s ways you wisely seek,

Five things observe with care,

To whom you speak,

Of who you speak,

And how, and when, and where


Chapter Sixteen

Name Cards:  What are name cards?  What did they do with them?  Who was the first person to receive one of Laura’s name cards?  Explain how they ended up exchanging name cards.

Name cards were colored card with names printed on them.  Sometimes they had pictures printed on them.  They exchanged the cards with each other.  Laura gave her first name card to Almanzo Wilder.  Almanzo gave her a ride to school from the printers.  He gave her his name card, so she gave him one of hers in return.


Chapter Seventeen

The Sociable:  Describe the sociable and Mary and Laura feelings about it.


Chapter Eighteen

Spelling Match:  Why did the town’s people come together at the school?  What did they end up doing?  Who ended up winning?

The town’s people decided that they wanted to start a literary society.  That evening they decided to have a spelling match.  Pa won the spelling match!


Chapter Nineteen

The Literary:  Name some of the things they did for entertainment at the literary meetings.

They played charades.  Pa and Mr. Fuller played music.  They had a musical program.  They had a debate.  They had Mrs. Jarley’s Wax Works.

New England Supper:  Describe the New England Supper.


Chapter Twenty

The Party:  Describe the birthday party include what they had to eat and what they did.


Chapter Twenty-One

Sledding:  What did the big boys and girls do at recess?  Why did Cap turn the sled around?  What did Nellie think of the sled ride?  What did the other girls think?

The big boys pulled the big girls around on the bobsled.  Laura told Cap that Mary didn’t want to go to Main St, so he turned the sled around.  Nellie was furious about the ride.  The other girls thanked the boys for the ride.

The Last Literary:  Describe the last literary.


Chapter Twenty-Two

The Blizzard:  What did Kitty think of the blizzard?  How did the blizzard help Laura study?

Kitty was frantic at the onset of the blizzard.  The blizzard allowed Laura to focus on her studies as she no longer wanted to go for a walk.


Chapter Twenty-Three

The Revival:  What did Laura and Ma think about the Revival? Who walked Laura home from the revival?

Laura and Ma both preferred Rev. Alden’s preaching.  Almanzo walked Laura home.


Chapter Twenty-Four

School Exhibition:  What took place at the school exhibition?  What did Almanzo ask Laura after the exhibition?

The students took turn reciting different things that they had learned. Almanzo asked Laura if she would like to go sleighing after he built the cutter.


Chapter Twenty-Five

The Visitor:  Who came to visit the Ingalls?  What did he want?  What did Laura say?

Mr. Brewster came to visit.  He wanted Laura to come teach their school.  Laura said yes, and took the teaching exam.

My Favorite 4th of July Memory:  Draw a picture of your favorite 4th of July memory and write a little story about it.
