You may want to use cardstock and a notebook for this Little House in the Big Woods Lapbook instead of file folders as this is a large (huge!) project.

Little House in the Big Woods Lapbook

This lapbook doesn’t include lessons, but it does include a lapbook guide. Here is a sample from Chapter 1:

Chapter 1: Little House in the Big Woods

1. Setting Simple Fold Book
The setting of the story is the location and time frame in which the story takes place. Re-read the first paragraph. When did this story take place? (It says 60 years ago; in order to get the true time, look at the copyright date and subtract 60 years.) Where did this story take place?

2. Animals in the Big Woods Tab Book
At the beginning of chapter one, we learn of many animals who live in the big woods: bears, wild cats (cougar/panther), muskrats, mink, otter, foxes, and deer. Throughout the study, your student will be asked to research and write about various animals.

3. Little House Simple Fold
After you finish the chapter, use this mini-book to describe the little house where the Ingalls family lived. If necessary, look back through chapter 1 to find descriptive words used for the little house.

4. Preparing for Winter Simple Fold
Use this book to write about how the Ingalls family prepared for winter.

5. Characters Fan
Note: This book will be used throughout the entire book.

Setting (see #1) is a piece of a story. Another story piece is the characters. Your student will be introduced to many characters throughout this story. Add characters’ names and character traits to the fan. Use one piece for each character.

6. Pa’s Stories
Note: This book will be used throughout the entire book.

Pa tells stories to Laura and Mary. If you’d like, record a short summary of each story in this mini-book. Use one page of the mini-book for each story you encounter as you read the book.

7. Pastimes Simple Fold
Discuss the differences between the Ingalls’ life and your family’s life. One of these is pastimes. What did Laura and Mary do for fun? As you read the subsequent chapters, add to this book.

8. Little House in the Big Woods Copywork
This is a cover book for the pages of copywork you’ll find throughout this study.
