My Blue Boat by Chris Demarest follows the story of a girl who imagines small adventures in the big ocean (or bathtub!) and eventually ends up following the lighthouse back home.

The poetic words of this book match the beautiful illustrations to bring your preschooler a simple yet wonderful story.

This was the first lapbook my oldest son and I ever attempted (16 years ago!), and I hope you enjoy Homeschool Share’s My Blue Boat lapbook.

Sailing Song
Enjoy this simple song sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” If you want, add some hand motions for wind and waves.

This is another simple song sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”

What Is Blue?
Introduce or review the color blue with this book, My Blue Boat.

Your student will color a boat, blueberries, and a blue jay for this side by side book.

Play a game of “I Spy” with your student. What other blue things can she find in your house?

Animals in the Ocean Book
“I dance with whales, play tag with dolphins.”

Who lives in the ocean? Your student can color the animals: crab, shark, dolphin, jellyfish, sea urchin, eel, whale, and fish.

If your student is interested in this topic, check out some ocean animal books from your local library.

Letter W Accordion
Introduce or review the letter W. Lots of W words pop up in My Blue Boat. W is for water, wind, waves, and whale!

Practice Writing Letter W
If your student is ready, let her practice writing Ws and add them to the whale shaped book.

Star Sizes Sequencing
“My blue boat dips under the moon as I look for stars.”

Color, trace, and cut out the stars. Use them for practicing size sequence. Which one is smallest? Which one is largest? Put them in order from smallest to largest. Encourage your student to try putting them in order from largest to smallest.

My Boat
If your student had a boat, what color would he want it to be? Let your student use crayons, markers, or paint to decorate the boat.

Watercolor Art
The illustrations in this book were made with watercolor paints. Get a set of Prang watercolors for your student and let her experiment. The illustration with “steer through storms” is especially interesting and beautiful. Your student may want to try to recreate it.

Make a Boat
You can find gobs of instructions online for how to make a simple boat. We’ve used milk cartons and floated them on a pond. We’ve also used walnuts to make tiny boats to float in a creek. Something about watching that boat float will fascinate your preschool student.

Throughout My Blue Boat, various types of boats are pictured in the illustrations. Consider checking out some extra boat books from your local library, and learn about different types of boats.
