The Big Hungry Bear Science Activities

Big Hungry Bear
Discuss what bears eat. Bears eat a variety of plants and animals: berries, seeds, insects, small animals, and even dead animals sometimes. If you have the opportunity, go to the library and check out a nonfiction book about bears. Read it together.

Strawberry Plant
What are the different parts of a strawberry plant? Leaves, flowers, fruit, and roots. Help your student label the diagram.

The Big Hungry Bear Literacy Activities

The Letter S
What starts with the letter S? Strawberry! Walk around the house with a laundry basket and collect as many items as you can find that begin with S. Complete the Ss accordion book.

Check out our Letter S Lapbook here.

Alternatively, you could focus on the letter B this week (B is for Bear, B is for Berry).

Describing Words
The title of this book has some words to describe the mouse, the strawberry, and the bear. Discuss this with your student. You do not have to introduce a young student to the words noun and adjective. Just say “describing words.”

NounAdjectives (describing words)
mousesmall
strawberryred, ripe
bearbig, hungry

As you complete the shutterflap book, try to think of new words to describe bear, mouse, and strawberry. You also get to describe sun, tree, and jam.

Fruit Colors
The mouse has a RED strawberry. Discuss fruit colors with your student. Use the flap book to reinforce this concept.

Halves
The mouse cut the strawberry in half. Discuss halves with your student. Buy some fruit at the store and cut each piece in half and share it.

Strawberry Size Sequencing Activity
In this story the mouse is small and the bear is BIG.

Discuss sizes with your student. Gather a variety of toys and have your student sort them into three piles: small, medium, and large. If you want to make it more challenging include: small, medium, large, and extra-large.

Other Lapbook Activities

Strawberry Treats
What can you make with strawberries? Strawberry shortcake, strawberry pie, strawberry ice cream, fruit salad, and so much more! Have fun discussing your favorite treats. Be sure to make some strawberry foods this week! Let your student draw a favorite treat inside the mini-book.

The mouse puts on a disguise. Discuss why he would do that. If your student could disguise herself, who or what would she be? Look for items around your house and see if you can disguise yourselves.
