Notebooking Pages Chapters 1-13

Chapter One: Something About Indians
1. Label and color the following on a blank USA map.
Green - The forest country between the Mississippi River and the East Coast.
Yellow- The plains and Mountains between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains..
Purple - The desert - Arizona and New Mexico.
Blue- The sea - from Washington North along the Canadian Coast to Alaska.
2. Character: Flying-Squirrel saw something to be done she did it without being told.  Discuss and make a list using notebooking page. 

Chapter Two: People of the Forest and Lakes
1. Describe Otter-Tail's home.
2. Describe the clothes Otter-Tail wears in the winter and summer.
3. Describe what Indians of the Forests and Lakes eat.

Chapter Three: Otter-Tail Goes Hunting
1. Describe the kinds of animals Otter-Tail Hunts.

Chapter Four: Flying-Squirrel Gathers Bullrushes

Chapter Five: People of the Plains
1. Describe how dogs carried the tribes belongings.

Chapter Seven: In the Days of Rides-Away-Tinkling
1. Describe the differences in the way Buffalo-Calf' and Rides Away Tinklings' tribes killed buffalo.
2. Describe how Rides-Away-Tinkling earned her new name, Woman-No-Spirts-Can- Harm.

Chapter 8: People of the Deserts and Mesa

Chapter 9: Little Turtle of the Cliff Dwellers
1. Describe what happened to Little Turtle that made him feel clumsy as a child?
2. Describe what Little Turtle did to save his tribe.

Chapter 12: Raven and Whale-Tooth Hunt a Whale
1. Research whales.
2.
Explain what happened to Raven that everyone said was lucky. (There isn't a notebooking page for this topic.)
Activity- make a totem on page 20

Chapter 13: Cedar Bough's Bargain
1. Describe how Cedar-Bough won her freedom.

2. Explain the arrangement between Raven and Whale-Tooth.

3.  Record information about each of the characters (Raven, Cedar-Bough, and Whale-Tooth) on the character page.

Review Activities
1. Find a picture of a buffalo. Make a poster of the various uses for buffalo.  Draw and label the following:
Tee-pee - Buffalo skin
Bones - Tools and weapons
Horns - bows
Insides - Food, thread
Poop - Fire starters
Hoofs - Glue

2. Make and play the Indian games on pages 44-45 in the Native American Activity Book.

3. Make six character disks (a paper circle about the size of the top of a large Mayo. Jar) .Draw and label the following character disks and place them on a poster board around a USA map with lines drawn to the places the characters lived.

Otter-Tail and Flying- Squirrel Indians of the Forests and Lakes who live near Lake Superior in Wisconsin.
Buffalo -Calf, an Indian of the Plains who lives in Minnesota.
Rides-Away-Tinkling, an Indian of the Plains who lives in Missouri.
Little Turtle, an Indian of the Desert who lives in Arizona.
Cornflower, an Indian of the Desert who lives in New Mexico.
Whale-Tooth, Cedar Bough and Raven, Indians of the Sea who live near Vancouver in Canada.
