Harold's Drawing Game
Harold's Drawing Game Cards (regular
version)
Harold's Drawing Game Cards (for beginning
readers)
Object: Be the first team (or person) to make 4 correct guesses from
sketched picture clues. Note: If you are playing this with your
student, and it's just the two of you, you don't need to have an object!
Just play for fun and try to guess each other's drawings. (Two Player
Version at bottom of page.)
Materials Needed:
Set of Harold's Drawing Game Cards
Timer, if desired
Purple Crayons
Pad of Paper (or scrap paper-- just something to draw on)
How to Play--Regular Version
Pick teams (divide the number of people you have playing).
Select one team to go first. One of the members will need to be the
Sketcher and the other members will be Guessers.
The Sketcher selects (and secretly looks at) a card from the
card stack. (You may want to have two card stacks if applicable-- one
regular stack and one stack for beginning readers). The word on that card
is to be sketched. First, the Sketcher turns the card face
down so no one can see it. The Sketcher starts the timer (modify the time
depending on the ages of your players-- 60 seconds may be too much time, but is
good for beginners). The Sketcher then draws a picture clue (or many
clues) of the word on the card.
Sketching Rules:
• No letters, words or numbers can be drawn.
• Never speak while sketching-- but you may gesture to indicate if the Guessers
are on the right track.
As the Sketcher sketches, the Sketcher’s teammates start shouting out what they
think is being drawn. Players can guess as many times as they want. Guessing is
NOT done in turn! It's wild and fun!
If the Sketcher’s team guesses correctly before time runs out, the Sketcher’s
team gets one point and marks the score on a separate sheet of paper; it is now
the opposing team’s turn to sketch and choose a new card. However, if the
Sketcher’s team does not guess correctly before the timer is emptied, they do
not win the point. The opposing team then gets ten seconds to make one guess to
win the point. If the opposing team guesses correctly, they win the point and
mark the score on a separate sheet of paper. If the opposing team does not
guess correctly, no one wins the point. It is now the opposing team’s turn
to sketch and choose a new card.
Each time your team must draw a new card, select a new team member to be the
Sketcher.
Two Player Version
Instead of teams, you are just going to do this as individuals. Let
your student choose a card (you may need to use
Harold's Drawing Game
Cards for beginning readers). Don't look at the card! Tell him
to draw the word on the card, and you will see if you can guess what he is
drawing. After he finishes (and you've hopefully figured it out), it's
your turn to draw a card and let your student guess what you are drawing.
Have fun!
